BREXIT HAS GIVEN US INDEPENDENCE IN FISHING, FARMING AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Summary:
Outside of the EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), which mainly benefitted very large landowners with subsidies, the UK system is being changed to encourage better stewardship of farmland as animal habitats – and will spread the subsidies better amongst smaller farms.
Recent months have seen tens of thousands of farmers, across the whole of the EU, protesting at EU agricultural policies. Policies that the UK is no longer bound to implement, and so not a threat to UK farmers and their livelihoods.
Explanation:
The EU Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) saw 50% of the funds from the EU – which itself was merely a redirection of the funds contributed by the UK taxpayer – going to just 10% of the largest landowners. Now outside of the EU, the approach to farming subsidies in the UK has been overhauled, with a changed focus on land stewardship and sustainable farming initiatives, to encourage farmers to retain landscapes for wildlife habitats.
This change to farming subsidies would simply not be possible, without being outside of the EU and its Common Agricultural Policy. Recent months have seen tens of thousands of farmers, across the whole of the EU, protesting at EU agricultural policies. Policies that the UK is no longer bound to implement, and so are not a threat to UK farmers and their livelihoods.
