BREXIT MEANS WE CONTROL OUR OWN BORDERS

Summary:

Brexit made it tougher for EU criminals to enter the UK. The ending of Freedom of Movement for EU citizens within the UK, allowed for equal application of UK entry rights for both EU and Non-EU citizens, including the default refusal of entry where someone has been in prison for a year or more.

This equal treatment resulted in over 12,000 EU citizens being refused entry to the UK in 2023 – who otherwise would’ve been likely granted entry under Freedom of Movement.

Explanation:

Brexit made it tougher for EU criminals to enter the UK. The ending of Freedom of Movement for EU citizens within the UK, allowed for equal application of UK entry rights for both EU and Non-EU citizens, including the default refusal of entry where someone has been in prison for a year or more.

Under EU free movement we had to allow some foreign criminals into the country who would otherwise have been stopped and turned away. The implementation of equal treatment of all criminals resulted in a five-fold increase of over 12,000 EU citizens being refused entry to the UK in 2023 – who would’ve otherwise been likely granted entry under Freedom of Movement. Home Office figures showed that in the first three quarters of 2019 just over 2,200 people from the EU were turned away at the border – compared with 11,600 in the first three quarters of 2023.
