BREXIT MEANS BETTER TRADE

Summary:

From outside of the EU, the UK has been able to offer UK businesses the opportunity to petition the government to remove tariffs on a given type of product for a period of time, which the Government then reviews and if approved looks to implement – as it did in April 2024 with over 120 tariff lines.

This would simply not be possible from within the EU, as tariff lines within the EU Customs Union must be the same for all member states.

Explanation:

Now outside the EU Customs Union, the UK has been able to offer UK businesses the opportunity to petition the government to remove tariffs on a given type of product for a period of time, which the government then reviews and if approved looks to implement – as it did in April 2024 with over 120 tariff lines.

Import tariffs on goods including flowers, fruit juices and chemicals were suspended for two years on 11 April 2024 and remain until June 2026, according to the Department for Business and Trade. UK importers of more than 120 products from all countries could benefit from the temporary withdrawal of duties. The affected products – primarily used as inputs in domestic production – include agricultural ones such as juices, preparations and starches, and non-agricultural goods such as ceramics, leathers and car parts. The measure is aimed at helping make the UK’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) more globally competitive.

This would simply not be possible from within the EU, as tariff lines within the EU Customs Union must be the same for all member states.
